Boot OS X off a flash drive
HOWTO: Install and Boot OS X On a Flash Drive at Brad’s Blog
I mainly just skimmed this...I did see that it hasn't been tested on an Intel Mac. I wonder how driver dependent this is. Are all drivers for all Mac's included on the reinstall DVD's?

Re: Boot OS X off a flash drive
Ok, so I'm really wanting to try this. I took a look around and Newegg has 4GB flash drives for under $50 now. My main concern is with the seek/write times to the drive. Most of the ones I looked at seem to be around the 10-15mb range for write and in the 20-30mb range for read. Would that be really that much faster than going to a hard disk?

Re: Boot OS X off a flash drive
I am doing it with Linux... I should try with MacOS. The bad thing is that the Intel Macs need a drive with the "new" EFI partitioning tables in order to boot off of them. So old drives that have the PC-type MBR tables won't show up in the "Option Key" boot selection.
It also sucks because all of the PCs out there need MBR tables, and can't boot off of EFI. |
