HD-DVD to regular TV?

My 7yr old DVD player is going on the fritz. Anyone know if an HD DVD player will work with a regular(analog) TV? I'm not ready to buy an HD TV yet but if I'm gonna replace the DVD player I might as well get current technology. Maybe even one that does HD & Blu Ray...

Probably if you have S Video in on your TV. The biggest thing will be the connection types. Though it may clip the edges on HiDef DVDs.

Re: HD-DVD to regular TV?

So I did some digging and apparently DVD players that do both HD & Blu-Ray formats are far and few in-between. Supposedly there's a Samsung unit about to hit the market but price point hasn't been announced yet. Analysts are expecting it to be about $599. I don't need a new DVD player that bad. Might end up with another standard unit until prices on the HD stuff come down some more. Perhaps by Christmas.

Re: HD-DVD to regular TV?

Not much reason to get a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player if you don't have a TV that will support it. They're still in the middle of the format war, but from what I've seen it looks like Blu-Ray might end up winning. You can get a PS3 and that comes with composite video cables (you've gotta buy the HD cables separate )
In any case, buy an HDTV first with an upscaling regular DVD player and let the format war fizzle down before jumping on board.

Re: HD-DVD to regular TV?

My TV works fine - I wasn't gonna replace it until it broke or I got a house; whichever comes first. I figured since the DVD player is on the fritz it's a good time to upgrade it, that's the only reason I was considering HD/Blu Ray.
