Xen server

Any of you guys have any experience with Xen server? It's hypervisor based virtual server. It's a free download but it only runs on 64 bit hardware with VT enabled CPUs. I'm thinking of building one monster computer and running a few servers off of it for a home lab.

Citrix Systems » Citrix® XenServer

Thoughts?

Re: Xen server

I don't use Xen, instead I use Ubuntu with VMWare workstation, which is free.

Re: Xen server

Give Xen a try - it's blazing fast compared to VMWare.

Re: Xen server

Really? I have a machine I could do this on... I might tinker with it today.

Re: Xen server

Oh yes.... it took more than a few days of head banging to get it up and running. But I have a Core 2 Quad-Core box with 8GB of RAM to run it on.

I ended up with Ubuntu's AMD64 port running on it, with Xen 3.1. Currently have 6 guest kernels running right now. The trick is that all of the kernels either have to be Intel x86 Non-PAE (limits you to 3 GB RAM) or Intel x86-64, AMD64, or x86-32 PAE enabled. You can't mix the non-PAE with PAE. That was my major holdup.

I have Ubutu and NetBSD partitions up and running right now. It's awesome.

Re: Xen server

Couldn't get it to work with v4? Weird.
