IPv6

So I have been messing around with IPv6 here at the house. Today I finally got everything working, I can even connect to IPv6 sites without using IPv4, except for the first little bit of tunneling.

I am using the free Broker service offered by Hurricane Electric, and then configured my OpenBSD router to use the tunnel and serve up IPv6 to the internal house network.

The only other thing to do was configure the DNS server I have with the new IPv6 enabled root server hints file, and I was off and running.

OSX worked flawlessly, it had already picked up on its new IPv6 address before I could even go into the network settings and check it. The trick was the router.

I can't wait until this is the standard, so much easier to set up than the old IPv4 we all know today. Once the router knew it's IPv6 address, it advertised itself to all the machines, and about 10 seconds later IPv6 was up and running.

The only few things I have left to do is add the DNS server's IPv6 address so that the clients use IPv6 for DNS, and then also tweak my firewall rules now that I have IPv6 client traffic. Right now everything is passing through, but since all my machines on IPv6 are Linux, BSD, or OSX I am not in a huge rush.

Any good sites to read up on this stuff? I don't know much about it as it's out of my field but I wouldn't mind familiarizing myself for the fun of it.

The best thing I have found is actually an O'Reilly book called "IPv6 fundamentals".

Other than that, there are a few IPv6 wikis out there... the one at ARIN is pretty good.
