wireless network question

I have a guest wireless network and a private WN. The guest NW SID is broadcast and the private is not. I tried to change the connection order and the guest network remained persistently at the top of the list. I could not even DELETE it. I ended up mangling the TKIP password to stop registering to it.

Anyone know about how to correctly accomplish network order and deletion in wireless preferences?

Re: wireless network question

I'll let one of the more experienced guys take a whack at it but my best guess is that it's taking the path of least resistance?!

ccwilli has noticed some unusual bugs on his install of Leopard as far as settings not sticking. Perhaps you're having some of the same troubles.

Re: wireless network question

Interesting I only have the one so it is at the top. But you can go to the wireless pane in Networks and click the pencil which should allow you to delete it. Also do you have the wireless icon in your toolbar? This would not cure it but would make the switch trivial. Sorry not much else I can say without being there.

Re: wireless network question

I recently started using my wireless again since upgrading to Leopard and I'm having similar issues. I only have one SSID and it's not broadcasted. 9 out of 10 times it won't reconnect to the network after coming out of hibernation unless I turn the NIC off and then back on. Methinks it's a bug.

Re: wireless network question

could be... When I close the lid on both my laptops, 9 out of ten times I have to hold the power key and hard reset them to get the OS back.

Re: wireless network question

Interesting I have heard none of this before and have no issue (but I do have a PowerBook not intel..)

Couple of things that may help:
Leopard Bug - Can’t Wake Up from Sleep inconsistency
This is basically deleting the power management preferences (may be corrupted)

Apple - Support - Discussions - Problems in waking from sleep ...

Long thread but you may find something like yours. I noticed the drive attached thing. Are your drives set to power off before the screen? It maybe that your drive is not waking...

Re: wireless network question

Not sure what changed but my issues seem to have gone away. I've installed some updates recently but I can't remember if any of them addressed anything with the wireless.

I finally figured this out. I'm surprised at apple for this one
If the battery is low, below some percentage, the system will not power back on after you close the lid until you hook it back up to the charger.

this is still aggravating me. On a PC I can specify the network SSID order. With my Mac, I have to mangle the password for it to ignore the SSID I dont want to connect.

Re: wireless network question

You can set the preference. Open Network Preferences, click on Airport and then click on Advanced. It'll show a list of your Preferred Networks where you can set the preference.

Re: wireless network question

Signal strength will only show once you're already connected. To look at it before hand you'll need a third party utility such as iStumbler: iStumbler 98

Re: wireless network question

Another advantage of iStumbler is that if you have a neighbor that is on your channel you can spot them. Especially one that shuts his router off and on. Mine swapped channels onto me. I could not figure out why sometimes it rocked and other times it was sooo lame until I fired up iStumbler and saw the toad on my channel.

Re: wireless network question

Look at the wireless icon on your menu bar. There are 4 bars. If they're all dark that means you have full signal. If only some of them are dark then you have a weak(er) signal. It doesn't give you percentages but at least it's something.

Re: wireless network question

Now I'm having trouble since upgrading to 10.5.3 It'll connect for a split second, then drop off and I have to go manually add the network back in. Having some issues with the external keyboard being recognized after a reboot/cold boot, too.
