Cyber/Net Nanny for Macs?

Hey,

Anyone know of a good free software that is Mac OSX compatible that we can use to keep an "eye" on the sites that our 12-year-old niece goes to? I also want it to filter, so she's not accidently getting pop-up porn, etc...

I know that Cyber Nanny and Net Nanny are a couple, but they seem to only be Windows compatible...The computer that she will be using mostly is a Powerbook G4 running OS 10.4.11...

Thanks!

Any chance of upgrading to Leopard? It has parental controls built in.

Hmmm....probably not for the computer that she will be using...I have leopard on the Mac that I use for work and school, but I'm on it nearly all of the time...So how do you set up parental controls in Leopard....just curious...

Re: Cyber/Net Nanny for Macs?

  • Create a separate account for the munchkin in System Preferences.
  • Click Show All to go back to the main view
  • Click Parental Controls
  • Highlight the account you just created
  • Go through each of the tabs to block/enable content based on discretion.
You can restrict them to use only certain applications, create a predefined list of websites that she can browse to, set time limits on when she can log on to the computer, log what she does and even do some more advanced things like disabling the CD burner, Dock modification, etc.

Right, Right....I knew that! Believe it or not...I'm pretty sure I can do that in Simple Finder on my Powerbook..I don't know why that thought didn't cross my mind...I guess I didn't realize you could create a pre-defined list of sites she could visit! We do this at school for our students....Having a duh moment

It's ok, we all have our blonde moments. It's not just a hair color, it's a state of mind!
