vmware Fusion 2.0 beta is out - Now Final!

Downloading it now.

More Displays. More 3D. More to Love: VMware Fusion 2.0 Public Beta 1 Now Available | Team Fusion

Excited to see the new features. Multi monitor support is definitely a bonus.

The coolest part is the free upgrade for those that bought v1.

Multi-monitor scares me. I use it one screen in full screen mode while Mac OSX is on the other. That is sweet just like to machines. Hopefully that doesn't break.

Re: vmware Fusion 2.0 beta is out

Finally had a chance to tinker with it some. There's a handy "easy install" mode for some operating systems(Windows only I'm assuming) that lets you do an automated install. Put in your name and product key and it goes through the entire install without any additional user input. It even does Vmware tools!

Unity is nice, also. It's pretty much the same as Coherence in Parallels.

My laptop is getting a little long in the tooth so I probably won't use it much. Time to start saving for that Mac Pro.

Re: vmware Fusion 2.0 beta is out

Does anybody have a verdict on Fusion? Also comparing it to Parallels, how does it stack up?

I have a Mini on the way. It will be here on Thursday. I am thinking about loading one or the other.

I've tried both, I think VMWare is better. Then again, I don't know what they've done to Parallels recently since I haven't used it in quite a while.

VMWare I have both and VMWare seems a bit less flaky and better for Linux. Both are nice though.

FWIW I HAD to go to VMWare to be able to format CF cards in ext2 using Linux and Parallels cannot do that.

Re: vmware Fusion 2.0 beta is out - Now Final!

Despite the fact my company doesen't formally support Mac's, I guess someone in our corp. IT doesen't like that idea because I found a library of Fusion iterations on one of our IT sites

So I believe I have the latest here...any tricks to installing? any gotcha's? any bad press since last time?

What I have is a 3 laptop household, (2) WinBlows and (1) OSX. I am looking to take my personal laptop, dump it to a vm and run it in Fusion sometimes when I need apps that I cannot yet get on a Mac . But is Fusion like VMware server, or more of a workstation thing? I guess I am trying to find out if it means I have to have it always on (using resources) and then start/stop virt machines - or if the entire affair is on/off?

Sounds like a dumb question, but after using vmw on my last XP laptop, it seemed even when it wasnt actually started or running it still had some hooks online keeping track of things and the pc performed better when I removed it. With the Centos (redhat debranded) Dell precision at work, I've never even bothered checking into it because I have vm running about 4 boxes on it so I am not even sure I know how to login to the base os

So far, it looks too good to be true....guess I am hoping it is, cause I really don't want to try and figure out the other ways of doing this if I don't have to

Re: vmware Fusion 2.0 beta is out - Now Final!

You load it just like any other app and fire up your machines from within the console. So I guess in essence that makes it like GSX Server. The cool thing is you can run it in Unity mode so you can launch Windows apps from your dock. This does require the VM to be running all the time though. Once Apple patches OSX to handle the 8GB of RAM properly, that should be a non-issue resource wise.

Re: vmware Fusion 2.0 beta is out - Now Final!

for the mac, I like parallels better. For some odd reason, they had a different group develop Fusion, so although the VMs are compatible, the UI is completely different than VMWare player and WS. Parallels does a better job if youre running windows. If you're going to be loading a lot of L/Unix appliances, then Fusion might be better.
