Re: New Garmin device

A Mac version of what? The article says pretty much all their GPS devices already are Mac compatible, no?

Correct, but Mapsource isn't a device.

But a Mac specific 'device' would likely need a method to load routes, thus a Mac native Mapsource IS a possible side effect.

Re: New Garmin device

LAME! I tried Bobcat and it sucks!

To enter a route in that would be real painful.

You need to convert maps from Windoz so you need a Windoz box to use you Mac. My first attempt at converting the files crashed and the output file crashed Bobcat.

After entering a route you get zero feedback on length/time of the route.

Hitting find to check if I can find my house crashed it.

Selecting a category puts a subcategory but to the LEFT of the category very counter intuitive.

Find address is not enabled.
Now for the couple of good things. You can drag waypoints to relocate them. Drawing is fairly quick.

In short MAYBE one day but this is more like alpha software than beta. Very easy to crash and missing MAJOR functionality.

Re: New Garmin device

Also tried TomTom Home but I can draw no conclusions as I have no maps and it is not even clear if you can do routing within the program or must use your unit (which I don't own). The interface looks a bit disorganized though.

Re: New Garmin device

Guess I need to decide if I should help Garmin or just give up and keep using the 'doz crud. I had hope of something but the current is not really usable from Garmin and TomTom is a great unknown (and the website info is lame)

Re: New Garmin device

I played a bit more before heading to work this morning. I have decided I need to help Garmin. For some things this could be BETTER than Windoz with a bit of improvement.

I will start a new Garmin Bobcat thread tonight.

Here's a link to their blog:

And a blurb about their stance on Mac software:

Re: New Garmin device

Updated. I will download it tonight but it looks like the last two updates have added a LOT of functionality.

Re: New Garmin device

Checked out Bobcat some more. Nice update. Not ready for prime time but getting closer. One nice thing is folders. You can organize routes rather than having to open a file like 'doz version. You cannot change the route after entering it (yet) which is probably one of the final major features. Also you can set preferences but it would be better to tie routing preference to the route itself (and be able to change it). Overall though an impressive effort considering it is a sub 1.0 version. The day might come that the Mac version is better than 'doz
