VMware with Parallels?

Anyone run both on the same machine? I have parallels and it works nicely however it has one thing it fails miserably at. It seems you cannot mount a USB reader for CF cards . Of course this is on their fix list but this is preventing me from working on a project since I need to format cards in ext2 as bootable, something my Mac cannot do. Nor can Windows and Linux with Parallels. So I am considering getting VMware but do not want to undo the stuff I learned with Parallels... Help a sheep out

Re: VMware with Parallels?

Not sure. I uninstalled Parallels before I put Vmware on. I strongly doubt that the two will coexist due to resources. They will both be fighting for the same resources. Use a separate computer.

Not running at the same time just on the machine (use one or the other) Without corrupting each other.

Re: VMware with Parallels?

Yes but they both install extra drivers and services to use the same resources. If you're gonna do it make sure you have a good backup of everything.

Re: VMware with Parallels?

Darn I really need to format some CF cards

Guess I can install and remove stuff

Also I won't convert my windows VM since it is the only one I would not want to lose.

Thanks though.

Re: VMware with Parallels?

Only partially relevant, but here is a side by side of the two with Boot Camp thrown in there for good measure.

Mac Rumors: Boot Camp vs Parallels vs VMware Fusion Benchmarks

Re: VMware with Parallels?

Well I am running a trial version of VMWare and so far it works. It was a pain to install tools compared to Parallels since I needed to install compilers then do an install. But VMWare will let me access my CF card and format it to ext2. I will likely buy it and keep both (pros and cons to both).

Now I just have to figure out how to set up a cross compiler in Linux then in Mac OS X so I can use Xcode

Re: VMware with Parallels?

I use VMWare, mainly because I can mount virtual machines from other VMWare installations and run them, even if they run on other platforms such as windows or linux.

The fact that I can use my USB smart card reader is nice too.
