cleaning up a mac

I have a macbook pro that i bought 2 yrs ago. it has started slowing down and battery not lasting at all. I know I can replace the battery but what can I do to boost performance back up. I have gone through files and moved things off it and upgraded system but it's still becoming rather slow to respond and it gets really hot. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: cleaning up a mac

For a start go to Applications/Utilities and open Activity Monitor. This will allow you to see stuff like how much memory is being used and running processes. I would recommend that you start with memory, make sure you have some free memory (for instance I show 1gb free) Next check for out of control processes by clicking the %CPU header so that it sorts by that category. You might need to click twice or scroll to the bottom to see the process using the highest amount (currently my top process is Safari at 10-12%) My bet is one of three things is happening; a rogue process, you have increased things you do and are running out of memory, or you have gotten faster. Also check to make sure you are up to date on the system updates. I bet the heat is the battery continually trying to charge (just a guess)

An annual restore of any computer is more or less mandatory in my opinion. Back up all your data and pop in the restore disks. It makes a huge difference.
