App store

Did some browsing in the app store tonight. There are some pretty useful freebies in there. I didn't really look at any apps that aren't free as I'm not interested in turning my cell phone into a computer.

Some neat freebies that I've added are a flashlight app(there's at least 3-4 of these, some free, some aren't) that basically makes your screen turn white to provide lots of light. The down side of it is that the ambient light sensor dims the screen. There are several other flashlight apps you can purchase, some of them may disable the sensor for this purpose. I'm not sure.

Another one was a Movies.com app that lets you look up showtimes for movies and IMDB info on what's showing. I was even able to watch the trailer for Hancock. The app isn't perfect, it has a few bugs but it's a good start.

Bloomberg has a handy app that lets you view stock market data and AP news.

Really that's all I've downloaded. There are several categories to browse. The whole thing is actually very similar to the download section of Apple's main site (Apple - Downloads).

Installing the apps is pretty easy. Browse the categories, click on the application name for description and then click the button that reflects the cost in the top right. Free apps simply say FREE. Then click it again when the green install button appears and it takes you back to the home screen where you get a partially transparent icon with a status bar at the bottom of it that shows progress. When the install is complete the icon goes to full color and you're done.
