Firmware update v1.1.1
Well written article that covers both sides of the fence: A note to both Apple and iPhone customers on the v1.1.1 update - Engadget
To make a long story short...Apple is very much against the iPhone getting hacked and has stated that some phones could be turned into "bricks" if the devices are tampered with. Many people are up in arms. This article does a pretty good job of explaining both sides.

Re: Firmware update v1.1.1
While the anti-hack part is true maybe Apple had other motives. If the hacks changed the firmware a update would not work properly. This is because the hack changed the location of code the Apple was patching. Personally I think Apple is getting greedy on the locking thing to generate $$$ above and beyond the selling price but that does not change the fact that the warning MAY have been to safe guard customers from bricking the phone after an unauthorized system mod.
