iPhone on the way

My second RAZR has completely given up the ghost. Well, I shouldn't say completely because I can still turn it on and text but I can't make any phone calls because it reboots mid conversation. Bit the bullet and bought a 4GB iPhone. I didn't really have the money to spend on the 8GB at the moment, nor do I need it. 4GB is big enough, if I want a bigger MP3 player I'll get one of the 160GB drives. Supposed to be here on Friday.

Re: iPhone on the way

I like it. It's not the end-all/be-all of phones that everyone was expecting but it's a great starting point for an excellent product.

The interface is awesome - I have no complaints about it. Typing takes a little getting used to but I'm already getting the hang of it after just two days.

One thing that sticks out as a negative at the moment is the Bluetooth. I haven't found a way to not make it discoverable. To me that's a security flaw and enough reason to leave it turned off unless I'm in the car and using my headset.

Haven't been to too many places around town yet so I can't comment on Edge coverage but so far it seems ok. Not the fastest(we all knew that) but for me it's satisfactory. If I need bandwidth I find a hotspot and crack open my laptop.

Battery life is pretty impressive so far. Gave it a full charge Friday afternoon when I got it. I have over 2hrs of talk time on it and an additional 3-4hrs of tinkering with weather widgets, text messages, browsing the web some(about 8mb worth downstream), messing with the camera, etc. As of tonight when I threw it back on the charger I still had ~25% battery life, maybe more. I think once the "new" factor wears off I can probably get 3 days out of a charge pretty easily.

This isn't really an issue, but more of a 'would be nice' thing. I wish that sounds/tones/beeps(outside of ringtones and alarm sounds) would be customizable. I'm sure it can all be changed via hacks, but why not just build it into the software - it's both simple enough and nice enough. Hopefully in a newer revision... BTW, stock ringtones SUCK.

Overall verdict: It's a great gadget that does well with the few things that it was designed for. I haven't found it to be exceptional at anything yet, but changes are only a software update away. I'm also glad that I waited and didn't rush to dish out $500-$600 for it because I might've been disappointed. For the $200 that I paid out of pocket I think it's an awesome device and there was no better option in that price range.

Why use your laptop? Can't it hook up via wireless also? Does the McAdx widget work on it?

That's right, I remember now. There's some changes coming to the site here() and attachment permissions will be getting updated so you can upload it. Then I'll answer your question.

Re: iPhone on the way

I have no issues to speak of. There's a few annoying bugs but I haven't applied the latest firmware yet. Giving it some time for them to iron out any potential issues before I install it.

As far as battery life - I'm getting about 6hrs of usage(mostly browsing the web and some talk time) and about 2 1/2 - 3 days of stand by out of it. Not bad.

Still haven't put any music or movies on it.

Works as advertised, no problems to speak of.

Re: iPhone on the way

Had a chance to use it in Eastern Europe recently. I had zero problems calling back Stateside. It sensed that I was overseas and automatically turned on International Assist so I was able to call people out of my contact list without having to do anything extra. Visual voicemail and data did not work but SMS did. At $3/min for voice and $.50 per SMS it didn't get a whole lot of use but I used it enough to try it out.
