Third generation iPhone

So, rumors are starting to surface about a new version of the iPhone. In the last patch released, developers found traces of a version number showing a potential major hardware overhaul and according to this article(Video chat coming to the iPhone? : Ben Patterson : Yahoo! Tech) one guy thinks it might finally do video recording and maybe even video conferencing.

I still haven't replaced my first generation with the busted screen so I might just wait 4 more months for whatever is hitting the streets in June.

I also have a feeling it's going to get a significant bump in memory. Just the other day I was on Newegg and saw a 64GB flash drive for under $100.

Re: Third generation iPhone

Removable flash would be nice but not fit the current memory model that well.

Re: Third generation iPhone

Removable anything will never happen. Even the laptops are now going towards hard wired batteries. Truthfully, if there's 32-64GB of memory on the thing, there's really no reason to remove it.

Except for the future. With time the file system might change where data is stored more like a HD. Oh and I have a lot more than that in music. Add in pictures and video.... Imagine being able to have a few CF cards with extra videos for travel :idunno: There is never enough memory

Re: Third generation iPhone

Finally something worth getting excited about!

Quote:
- In-App Purchasing: Allows developers to sell additional content from within applications. Highlighted uses include magazine subscriptions, eBooks, additional levels and items for games.
- Peer-to-Peer Connectivity: Find other devices running the app via Bonjour over Wi-Fi of Bluetooth. Good for gaming, but also other applications for sharing data.
- Third-Party Accessory Apps: Allowing accessory manufacturers to create applications to interface with their hardware accessories.
- Push Notification: Rather than using background processes that hamper battery life, utilize third-party server to push badge, text, and audio alerts from applications.
- Turn by Turn: Apple will allow developers to use CoreLocation for turn-by-turn GPS directions.
- Cut, Copy and Paste: Available across all apps. Shake to undo or redo.
- Landscape keyboard: Available in all key applications, including Mail.
- MMS: Picture messaging now available.
- Voice Memos: Record notes, lectures, interviews, etc.
- Spotlight Search: Available across all applications. Systemwide search available from main home screen by flicking to the left.
- A2DP Bluetooth: Support for stereo bluetooth headsets.
Tons of API enhancements, can't wait to see what developers come up with.

sheep - are you downloading the beta?

Re: Third generation iPhone

And the rumor mill is picking up speed...

Quote:
  • New iPhone announcement around mid-June (duh)
  • New iPhone will be faster and have a more seamless experience unmatched by any device (could be just talking about 3.0, but we think it’s also a new iPhone)
  • U-Verse iPhone application; will allow control of your home DVR (play, pause, rewind, etc.)
  • The annual iPhone launch is “becoming a tradition.”
  • Nothing official is being confirmed, but they said that people should prep for an exciting time this summer.
  • AT&T is said to be working with Apple to create a unified product with an unparalleled experience across all their products and services.
  • Apple’s 3.0 software should tell us where the iPhone platform is going… uh, k?
  • They said customers shouldn’t need to choose from AT&T’s high-end devices because of features, they should choose based on preferences. The gap in capability should be filled with the new iPhone. Ok, bets on slide out QWERTY, autofocus camera, video sharing, blah blah?
  • Seems like the higher speed HSDPA (7.2Mbps) is being hinted at too which should confirm the earlier rumors of the new Infineon chipset.
  • The $99 3G netbook will start selling this summer, and the first one won’t be a Windows OS.

Re: Third generation iPhone

Not too much in the way of hardware upgrades but still pretty nice. The bump in battery life is welcomed. Increased 3G I don't care about because frankly I'm not convinced AT&T has the capacity to handle it. The OS changes are mega cool.

I'm glad I skipped the 3G and I will finally be replacing mine, probably next month. No more broken screen.

Re: Third generation iPhone

I got antsy and went to the AT&T store at lunch today. They sold out a little before I got there. Plenty of the 3G but none of the new ones. Had to place an order, hopefully it'll be here within a couple days.

Re: Third generation iPhone

Got it yesterday - haven't had a chance to try all of its features yet extensively but overall I'm pretty happy so far. I thought the S for Speed moniker was lame - and I still do, but man, they weren't kidding. It literally is easily twice as fast as my 2G.

Re: Third generation iPhone

I found a really really big gripe... My Alpine head unit in my car is no longer able to charge the phone. The phone comes up with a big yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the middle and an error message that says that it is not plugged into an approved accessory. Why does Apple have to screw with stuff like that? It still plays music fine and the controls still work but now if I want to charge the phone I have to unplug it from the car stereo and do so separately.

I had the same problem with my 4G nano. Then I got this.
Scosche Industries
If it makes you feel better you can buy it at the apple store too

I believe it works for the 3G as well...I don't remember what occurs when I plug my iPhone into my deck...I think it complains tho even with this thing, but at least it charges it IIRC.

Stupid part is the old iPod's all charged off 12vdc so thats what the Alpine is putting out. New ones and their LiPoly stuff are all 5vdc charging I guess, so thats what the issue is. You'd think they could just toss a regulator in there of some type that would resolve this issue...

Re: Third generation iPhone

I've had AT&T/Cingular/etc for 9.5 years and have had very few complaints about them.

That being said, if the iPhone actually makes it to Verizon there is a good chance I'm going to switch. The 3G coverage is dismal at best and even when there is coverage the chances of it actually working are up in the air.

Two weeks ago I noticed random service interruptions with my 3G coverage. I have full signal, yet any attempt to access data services(web browsing, weather, news, etc) would time out. I'd turn off the phone, turn it back on, and it might work - it might not. This went on for a few days so I called customer support.

Got through to a Level 2 tech quickly who informed me that my SIM card is throwing errors and has pretty much since I bought the phone and that I should go get a new one. Fine, easy enough. I stopped in at my local store and got a new card yesterday. Last night I was trying to catch up on some news and it's timing out. Try to pull up the weather, same thing. So I called customer support this morning, gave them the story(twice, because apparently the rep forgot that I was on the phone the first time and didn't listen to anything I said ) so she recommended that I just turn off the 3G service. Umm...What???!

During all this I also asked about MMS and it's tentative availability and she just repeated the "end of summer" spiel that's been getting shoved our way. She actually looked up the last day of summer on her handy dandy calendar(Sept 25th this year in case you're wondering) and then said "so it'll probably be enabled by Sept 26th".
