Airtunes

So anyone here use Airtunes? I'm considering getting an Airport Express Base Station so I can have music in my living room through my living room speakers instead of turning up computer speakers real loud.

Does this work well enough streaming over wireless? How much music quality is lost?

Another question I have is, is there any other source for the optical cable? I typically don't mind paying the extra for Apple stuff as it's high quality, but $40 for an optical cable is pretty steep.

Re: Airtunes

Eh, price of admission is much higher on those and I'm not sure I need it. No plans to buy/rent movies from iTunes. Also, it's one more thing to clutter my entertainment center and one more remote to fumble with. Airtunes would be much more seamless. I see that it also has a network jack on it so I might just run some cable and do hardwire.

I did it for a bit on the older model and it worked OK. Oh and I transferred my entire DVD collection via Handbrake for my Apple TV I have never rented a thing nor purchased it since the DRM is

Re: Airtunes

If you are going to use AppleTV in the way that sheep does...buy an Xbox360 and save yourself some $$ and aggravation

What I want to know is...Airtunes can only be streamed to if you have a Mac running iTunes right? which means pretty sounds only when my MB is on?
Thats where they lose me...if I am on the MB the crappy little speakers or headphones are fine. If I want the house to have music, I just press play on my wireless ipod remote sitting in the dock on my stereo, alot of the same music...

I just can't see spinning a hard drive for music

Re: Airtunes

I use Air Tunes, There is a minor glitch where the music will cut out randomly. Some Times it goes away if you select both the PC Speaker (muted or playing) and the Airport and/or Apple TV

I encounter the same issue when playing out of itunes through bt to my bt receiver on my stereo sometimes. The Mac realizes the BT is disconnected, and the speakers aren't on, and then resumes streaming on the BT. I wonder if it's something odd with the networking on the device(s) since you report the same on WiFI.
